Integrated Detector Module Design Completed

Zecotek Completes the Design of an Integrated Detector Module for Positron Emission Tomography and Gamma Scanning Devices

Singapore, January 15, 2013 - Zecotek Photonics Inc. (TSX-V: ZMS; Frankfurt: W1I), a developer of leading-edge photonics technologies for medical, industrial and scientific markets, today announced that it has successfully completed the functional design concept of an Integrated Detector Module (IDM). The IDM is a patent pending layered structure made of three principle components: an array of LFS scintillation crystals, an array of MAPD solid-state photo detectors, and a readout system. It is a cost effective and scalable design, ideal for new positron emission tomography scanner configurations and various types of gamma cameras.

“We have combined the best of our technologies to develop a cost effective Integrated Detector Module concept and design for positron emission tomography and gamma scanning devices,” said Dr. A.F. Zerrouk, Chairman, President, and CEO of Zecotek Photonics Inc. “Due to escalating costs with current medical scanning devices, we are seeing more and more medical organizations in the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China, starting to build their own PET devices. The IDM components represent approximately 70% of the cost of a PET device. Zecotek’s IDM is an ideal product for new-generation PET devices as it combines key performance characteristics of our LFS scintillation crystals, our MAPD solid-state photo detector and the technologies and expertise of the Zecotek Imaging Division. With our cost effective and integrated design Zecotek is at the forefront of this emerging market opportunity.”

The current process for the OEMs of medical scanner is to purchase scintillation crystals, photo detectors and various other components and technologies which are then assembled in-house adding to the overall cost of each device. Zecotek’s IDM provides an integrated, single product solution for OEMs and by incorporating three core imaging technologies allows for a cost effective, high performance new-generation PET system:

1. Zecotek’s patented (US patent No. 7,132,060) Lutetium Fine Silicate (LFS) series of scintillation crystals are distinguished by their combined high light yields and ultra-fast decay times,

2. Zecotek’s proprietary Micro-pixel Avalanche Photo Diodes (MAPD) solid-state design make MAPD photo detectors compact and insensitive to high magnetic fields and dramatically improves linearity and allows for very tight timing resolution by providing fast pulse rise time and low jitter,

3. Zecotek’s readout system and patented Depth of Interaction technology and Data Acquisition method improves the precision and hence the performance of PET scanning and other medical detection systems.
With the IDM and recently patented Data Acquisition Board, Zecotek becomes the only company worldwide to have all the elements for a high performance PET scanner, in one single organization.

Zecotek is in discussions with potential development and manufacturing partners and expects to make a selection in the first quarter of 2013. The Company is also working closely with prospective customers and designers with the aim of supplying the first IDM’s by June this year.
